Description |
This is a photograph taken at the Oak Lawn War Memorial on 95th Street near Columbus Drive. The black & white image is looking at the site where the World War 1 era tank, a French Renault, had been installed. Flag bearers with an array of flags can be seen standing on either side of the tank pad and the large Honor Roll sign can be seen in the background. This was possibly taken when that tank was removed as part of a national scrap drive to fund war efforts during World War II. In 1937, the American Legion established this site and placed a French built Renault FT tank, a 1917 World War I machine, as a memorial for veterans. That tank was removed and sold for scrap during World War II. An M5 Stuart tank was placed on the site after the war and has remained on site. The location is now an Oak Lawn landmark. |
