Description |
This is a photograph of a fire at Harlem Airport located on the southeast corner of 87th Street and Harlem Avenue. Fred Schumacher managed the airport. At one time six flying schools operated out of the airport which also included a repair shop and a half dozen hangers. The airfield was also a focal point for early black aviators including Cornelius Coffey and Willa B. Brown. An unidentified man watches as the hangars and a repair shop of Schumacher's Flying Service are consumed. The airfield was in use as early as 1933 and closed around 1956 after its lease expired. The Southfield Shopping Center and residential homes were then constructed on the property. |
