Description |
This is a photograph of the Oak Lawn War Memorial, circa 1943, at 95th Street and Columbus Drive. The black & white image shows a ceremony taking place with Boy Scouts and American Legion members. A flag bearer is holding an American flag on the left and on the right there is a flag for Boy Scout Troop 682 of the First Congregational Church. This ceremony possibly took place when the World War I tank was removed as part of a national scrap drive for World War II efforts. In 1937, the American Legion established this site and placed a French built Renault FT tank, a 1917 World War I machine, as a memorial for veterans. That tank was removed and sold for scrap during World War II. An M5 Stuart tank was placed on the site after the war and has remained on site. The location is now an Oak Lawn landmark. |
