Description |
This is a photograph of the Oak Lawn Baseball for Boys field near 98th Street and Central Avenue. Construction of the ball diamond and other facilities had just begun at the time of this photo. Standing from left to right are co-superintendents Audrey Alm and Helen Linderborg. Prior to the construction of the baseball field, this property housed a sewage treatment plant. The land was purchased by the Village in 1939 for the purpose of building the plant which was partially funded by a WPA (Works Progress Administration) grant. The plant operated until 1953 when the Sanitary District of Chicago (an Illinois State special-purpose district and now known as the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago) took over operations of sewage treatment. |
