Description |
This is a photograph of Wiley Simmons (l) and Joseph Ulatoski (r), chaplain and adjutant of the Green Oaks American Legion Post #757. They are pointing to eleven truckloads of debris which have been dumped on the Legion's memorial park located along Columbus Avenue near 95th Street. Simmons and Ulatoski charged that a construction firm working on a nearby road project dumped the debris which blocked the drainage ditch between the park and the Wabash RR tracks. In the background, an Enco gas station located at 5103 West 95th Street and the Brandt Building at 5131 West 95th Street can be seen. A sign for the Oak Lawn TV & Organ Service Center, at 5102 West 95th Street, and the Thomas Organ Studio, at 5136 West 95th Street, is visible just to the left of the tank. The small memorial park, a historical landmark that was established in 1937, contained an M-5 Stuart Tank and flagpole. In 1940, a WWI era French built Renault FT Tank was added to the site. The Renault FT was a WWI era tank that began seeing service in 1917. The Renault tank was eventually donated as scrap metal to aid the war effort during WWII and replaced by the M-5 Stuart. In the background on the right, the roof and chimneys of the Fernwood Smith Dry Cleaners are partially visible as is the Oak Lawn water tower. |
