Description |
This is a photograph of the building located at 9400 Southwest Highway. Library staff photographed the property at the request of Landmark, IL, a statewide non-profit dedicated to saving historic places. The organization promotes the preservation, restoration, and adaptive use of buildings and sites. This photograph features a view of the east facade of Oak Lawn Community High School located at 9400 Southwest Highway. A school marquee sign announcing Homecoming Week is seen in the photograph along with an Oak Lawn acorn sculpture. Acorns on Parade was the Oak Lawn Arts Commission's first public art project, modeled after Chicago's famous Cows on Parade. The acorn in this photograph is painted with the school's Spartan Pride logo. The original school building opened in September of 1952 and underwent three additions in 1955, 1959, 1963, and recently dedicated a Performing Arts Center in October of 2018. The school suffered major damage when a tornado tore through the south end of the building on April 21, 1967. |
