Description |
This is a photograph of the aftermath of the 1967 Oak Lawn tornado. It features a view of a bulldozer working to clear debris at the Anderson home located at 9400 S. Major Avenue. The Anderson home was demolished in the storm. In the background, the backs of heavily damaged homes along the east side of Massasoit Avenue are visible. Smoke is seen overhead in the background on the left, possibly from a controlled burn. Controlled burns were set and monitored by the Oak Lawn Fire Department or the National Guard and were used to dispose of numerous damaged buildings, lessening the amount of rubble that needed to be hauled out of the village. On the right, a large crane is partially visible, possibly working at the heavily damaged Suburban Transit Company bus depot located at 5800 W. 95th Street. In the immediate foreground on the right, a plastic cover is seen over items that may have been salvaged from the debris of the Anderson home. |
