This is a photograph of the exterior front entrance of First Congregational Church, 9411 S. 51st Avenue. The black & white image shows a woman, Belle (Simpson) Johnson and a cow, Patsy, posing in the entry way. This church building has been demolished. Belle Simpson Johnson, granddaughter of John Simpson, early settler of Oak Lawn and Scottish immigrant, and Patsy, the cow, owned by Herman Rathje, were teamed up on October 1, 1932 to depict the Chicago Fire for a historical pageant being given at the Church. The photograph was entitled "The Lady and the Cow". Belle Simpson Johnson had previously been the church organist. First Congregational Church is now known as Pilgrim Faith United Church of Christ. |
