This is a photograph of the Oak Lawn Centennial Parade in 1982. This event celebrated the 100th Anniversary of when Oak Lawn was first subdivided. This photograph features the Medinah Shriners Black Horse Troop performing on 95th Street near Massasoit Avenue. Shriners International is a fraternity organization that is an offshoot of the Masons. The Black Horse Troop is a parade unit of the organization and the Shriners are best known for their Shriners Hospitals for Children. People can be seen lining the north side of 95th Street to watch the parade. In the foreground, a person on the south side of 95th Street is partially visible. People are also watching from the stairwells at an apartment complex at 5720 West 95th Street. The brown building partially visible behind the horsemen is located at 5716 West 95th Street and housed doctors' offices. The building in the far right of the photograph housed the Suburbanite Currency Exchange at 5712 West 95th Street and Strad Photography at 5710 West 95th Street. People can be seen watching the parade from the rooftop of the currency exchange. A Metropolitan Life Insurance Company office, located at 5702 West 95th Street, is also visible. The building in the far right of the photograph at 5700 West 95th Street housed Pat Hayden Realty and the Fred C. Meyer State Farm Insurance office. |
