Description |
This is a photograph of the Oak Lawn War Memorial Site located at 95th Street and Columbus Drive. It features an M-5 Stuart Tank and war memorial located at Columbus Drive and 95th Street. The site is a historical landmark and was established in 1937. In 1940, a French built Renault FT tank was added to the site. The Renault FT was World War I era tank that began seeing service in 1917. That tank was donated as scrap metal to aid the war effort during WW II. The M-5 Stuart tank was introduced into military service in 1941 and saw combat in the African and European Theaters of war. In the background on the left, an apartment building on Columbus Drive is visible. The railroad tracks are just to the right (south) of the tank memorial. In the background, the Ingerson Rambler dealership located at 5000 W. 95th Street in partially in view. This park no longer exists and the tank was moved to a small pad just east of the railroad crossing gate when the area was redeveloped as a Metra parking lot in 2000. |
