Description |
This is a photograph of the Oak Lawn Minstrels performing in the Covington School auditorium. The ladies from left to right are Georgiana Linhardt, Ida Mann, Winifred Reynolds, Shirley Gillice (center), Marilyn Stubbe, Lillian Stubbe, and unidentified. Minstrel shows were a popular, yet racially derogatory, form of entertainment in America that began in the 1830s. Although they declined in popularity after 1900, it wasn't until the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s the shows faded from the mainstream. |
