Description |
This is a photograph, published in the Chicago Sun-Times, as an accompaniment to an article written by Ruth Dunbar. The black & white image shows five year old Dolores Dohm of Oak Lawn, busily working on her fingerpainting project. She was part of an experimental kindergarten program at Sward School. There are two other pieces of fingerpainted artwork behind the little girl on an easel or a ledge. Dr. Ruth Dunbar was a University of Illinois at Chicago graduate who earned her MA and her Ph.D from Northwestern University. She was an educator and authored a text book before she started working at Chicago Sun-Times, started as a copy reader and working her way up to a position she created-Education Editor. Her in-depth articles on education and educatio reform elevated the Sun-Times to nationwide prominence. Dunbar also served as the Assistant Director of the Illinois Department of Education in Chicago where she managed the Title One program for educationally deprived children in low income areas. After retirement, she worked as consultant for writing projects. |
