Description |
This is a photograph of men cleaning up near a construction site in the vicinity of 50th Avenue and 95th Street looking northeast. A Village of Oak Lawn Department of Streets dump truck is at the site. A caption printed on the picture reads "A Clean City 1940 Mayor Al Brandt". The railroad crossing at 50th Avenue is visible in the background on the left and a Coca Cola sign is seen on a building believed to be a gas station just west of the railroad crossing. On the right, a WWI French built Renault FT tank can be seen on a memorial site that was established in 1937 and located near the intersection of 95th Street and Columbus Drive. These tanks began service in 1917. The Renault tank was eventually donated back to the government for scrap to support the war effort during WWII. The tank was later replaced with an M-T Stuart tank. The M-5 Stuart tank was introduced into military service in 1941 and saw combat in the African and European Theaters of war. |
