Description |
This is a photograph featuring the railroad grade crossing located on 95th Street just east of 51st Avenue. The backs of apartment buildings along Columbus Drive parallel to the tracks are seen in the background. Partially visible in the right of the photograph near the flagpole is Oak Lawn War Memorial Site, an historical landmark located at 95th Street and the railroad tracks. It was established in 1937. In 1940 a World War I era tank, a French built Renault FT, was added to the site. These tanks began service in 1917. The Renault was eventually donated back to the government as scrap to support the war effort during WWII. The M-5 Stuart tank, currently on display at the memorial, was introduced into military service in 1941 and saw combat in the African and European Theaters of war. In 2000, the tank was moved from its original spot, in a small park north of the railroad tracks at 51st Avenue and Columbus Drive, to a small concrete pad on the south side of the tracks at 95th Street and Sproat Avenue/50th Court. This was done to accommodate the building of a Metra parking lot. |
