Description |
This is a photograph of the Oak Lawn Tank War Memorial being moved from its original spot in a small park north of the railroad tracks at 51st Avenue and Columbus Drive to its new spot, a small concrete pad on the south side of the tracks at 95th Street and Sproat Avenue/50th Court. The move was made to accommodate the construction of a Metra commuter parking lot. Ray Odle, a house mover from Kankakee, conducted the move. In this photograph, Odle and an unidentified coworker are photographed near the back of the tank before it is rolled out onto 51st Avenue. The tank memorial site is a historical landmark and was established in 1937. In 1940, a World War I era tank, a Renault FT tank was added to the site. These tanks began service in 1917. The Renault was donated as scrap metal to aid the war effort during World War II. The M-5 Stuart tank was introduced into military service in 1941 and saw combat in the African and European Theaters of war. The cars parked in the right of the photograph are on the property of the Pilgrim Faith United Church of Christ located at 9411 South 51st Avenue. The home and garage, the parsonage of the church, are seen in the background behind the tank in the right of the photograph. Another piece of construction equipment is working in the background near Columbus Drive. |
