Description |
This is a photograph of the Oak Lawn Centennial Parade in 1982. It features a car pulling a float sponsored by Krauss' Gaslight Lounge. The float includes a gas lamp, several people sitting at a table, a bar, bartender, and spittoons. The women appear to be dressed as dance hall girls while the man is outfitted as a cowboy. One of the women appears to be doing the can-can, a dance popular in dance halls in the 1840s. The float is moving westbound on 95th Street just past the railroad crossing at about 51st Avenue. The frame of an empty sign on the site of the Oak Lawn Shell Car Wash and Detail Center, located at 5105 W. 95th Street, is seen overhead and the building is partially visible in the background. Spectators are lining the south side of 95th Street to watch the parade. The event celebrated the 100th Anniversary of when Oak Lawn was first subdivided. |
