Description |
This is a photograph featuring Mayor Ernest "Ernie" Kolb with Olga Fischer Pereduina and her father Ben Fischer at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, located at 10400 S. Kostner Avenue, on the occasion of their reunion after 51 years of being apart. Fischer, of German descent, was conscripted into the Russian army at the start of World War II. His wife and children, David, Emma, Andrew, and Olga were all deported to a region near the Chinese border. Only Olga survived. With the help of the Lutheran Church and the Red Cross in Germany, Olga was able to learn her father's address in the United States where he had come bringing a wife and a son after living in Austria immediately following the war. Fischer, age 82, and his 61 year old daughter Olga were united on Monday, December 21, 1992 at O'Hare airport. Mr. Fischer's church, Mt. Zion Lutheran Church located in Oak Lawn, raised money and collected donations to help pay for the cost of her trip. |
